International Students - General Information



The Islamic College of Brisbane is a non-State school within the meaning of the Education (General Provisions) Act 1989. It was established in January 1995 and is the first school in Queensland to cater for the needs and aspirations of the Muslim community, through providing both primary and secondary education in an Islamic environment.

The curriculum followed in the School includes both Islamic and a secular education. The medium of instruction is English in all subjects except in Arabic language and Qu’ran. In secular education the school follows Queensland Studies Authority devised curriculum in all key learning areas i.e. English, Mathematics, Science, Social Studies, SOSE, Art, Health and Physical Education and LOTE. The program is also tailored to cater for the needs of students of different ages, abilities, aptitudes and levels of development. The guidelines for standards of learning as stated in the syllabi are followed and the school has put evaluation and assessment procedures in place to ensure that the students achieve Queensland standards of learning.

As a language other than English, the School teaches Arabic which is one of the ten priority languages under the LOTE category. Arabic is a compulsory second language at this School, the teaching of which provides better understanding of the Holy Qur’an and Hadith.

In Islamic education a program in Islamic Studies is offered. This consists of Qur’an recitation, Islamic history, Fiqh, Tawheed, Hadiths and Akhlaq (moral training). Islamic studies focus on correct Qur’an reading and Hadiths which deal with the history of the prophets, and in particular the life of Prophet Mohammed (S. A.W) and his companions. Students perform daily Zuhr Salat (early afternoon prayers) and the Friday Jum’a Salat (Friday prayers) at the School. In Arabic language and Islamic Studies the School follows syllabuses designed by Islamic College of Capetown, South Africa.


Islamic College of Brisbane is an approved school under the Education (General Provision) Act 1989. The School is registered with the Department of Education and is a member of the Association of Independent Schools of Queensland (AISQ). It is funded by the State and Commonwealth governments.

Entry Requirements

Islamic School of Brisbane will have the following entry requirements:

Applications for enrolment must be made on the approved Application Form, correctly completed, and must be accompanied by the following documents supporting the application: a completed Reference (Overseas Student) Form; a Copy of the Latest Student Report; a completed Subject Choices Form (Years 11 and 12 only); appropriate proof of identity and age; Written evidence of proficiency in English as a second language; and, an Application Fee ($AU 300.00).

An application for enrolment is deemed to be made when all of the above are in the hands of the Enrolment Secretary.

Applications from overseas students are processed according to entry criteria that are stated in this document.

Assessment procedures shall include an evaluation of reports from previous schools in the home country. In cases where report cards are not available or inconclusive by reason of terminology used or other factors, the school may require relevant testing of the applicant to assess the application.

In addition applicants must supply the results of a recent IELTS test or equivalent.
Applicants requiring tuition in English as a second language shall meet the costs of such instruction, as determined from time-to-time by the school.

Enrolment at Islamic College of Brisbane is conditional upon the acceptance of, and adherence to the 'Conditions of Entry' listed on the Application for Enrolment, and in other school publications.

English and academic criteria: Students seeking admission in Years 10, 11 and 12 must have completed an equivalent of 9, 10 and 11 years of schooling respectively in their own countries and obtained at least 50 percent in all the subjects studied. In English they must meet the standards shown in the table below.

English Levels

Under the National Code, 'the registered provider must obtain evidence that assessment of an overseas student's proficiency in English has been carried out (unless this is clearly not relevant). Assessment must be done by a suitably qualified person.

The Islamic School of Brisbane accepts results from the following: the International English Language Testing System (IELTS) or the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) or the International Second Language Proficiency Rating (ISLPR).

The following levels are guides only to recommended levels of English proficiency needed by English as Second Language (ESL) students for successful entry into Australian classes. Students should note that if their language proficiency is below that outlined in the table below, they may be required to undertake an intensive English language course before beginning mainstream studies.

Students wishing to enter the school below year 10 level are assessed individually based on the contents of their report cards and personal references, and may also be required to undertake a language proficiency test set by the school. They may also be given the Literacy and Numeracy tests devised by Queensland Education.


Islamic School of Brisbane offers programmes of studies of primary and secondary education.

All students are eligible for the Queensland Tertiary Entrance Statement (Provisional) and the Board of Senior Secondary School Studies Senior Certificate (Provisional) at the end of Year 12, as well as the Queensland Year 10 Certificate at the end of Year 10.
