ICB Cyber Club (Secondary)
The ICB Cyber Club (Secondary) was only established in Feb 2023. Although the club is quite young, our ICB WARriors team is 3rd in all of Queensland (Robocup Jr Secondary Rescue Line division).
What we do
The Cyber Club has two specializations – Robotics and Cybersecurity and will be focusing on the Robocup Jr and CyberTaipan competition respectively.
It is not possible to take on both specializations simultaneously.
Trainings will be held after school on Wednesdays after school 3.30-5.00pm (Training Day subject to change).
Training for robotics teams will involve familiarity with LEGO robots, programming, calibrating, and troubleshooting robots, and programming robots to autonomously complete tasks.
Junior teams will work on robots producing Islamic artwork as part of their participation in the Onstage Division of Robocup Jr.
Senior teams will work on robots following lines and overcoming obstacles and rescuing a ‘victim’ as part of their participation in the Rescue Line division of Robocup Jr.
It is projected that as the Club matures, students will be participating in Open and other divisions (Robot soccer etc) of the Robocup Jr.
Students who are interested in autonomous Robotics, building robots, and computer logic are encouraged to sign up for this specialization.
Junior teams are Years 7-8, and Senior teams are Years 9 and up.
For 2024, the Cyber Club is offering up to 4 competition teams (4 members each) – 2 junior and 2 senior teams.
Training for cybersecurity teams will involve understanding and executing commands on Linux (Ubuntu), understanding security vulnerabilities and how to patch them, password policies and protocols, and getting familiar with resolving compromised images.
It is projected that as the Club matures, students will be [virtually] participating in other international Cybersecurity-related competitions.
Despite the Cybersecurity team being only 6 months old, the team scored an amazing 113 points (out of 200), ranking 57th in the whole country.
Students who are interested in Cybersecurity, with a potential to Cyber careers, are encouraged to sign up for this specialization.
This specialization requires students to work hard on computing logic and coding, solve problems, and think out of the box, and is available only for Years 9 and up.
For 2024, the Cyber Club is offering 1 competition team (5 members).
Training etiquette and things to note
- During training, students are free to use their mobile phones, and may need to change into comfortable attire as there is quite a lot of moving around.
- On some weeks, the Club may offer special workshops with experts, and students may need to finish later at 5.30pm.
- Closer to competitions, it is normal for students to want to meet for extra sessions for more preparation. Our award-winning team stayed until 5.00pm every weekday for 2 weeks prior to their award-winning stint.
- Most cyber competitions run over Saturday and Sunday, so students need to be prepared to lose multiple weekends. The 2023 numbers: Both Robotics and Cybersecurity students spent 3 Saturdays and 1 Sunday at competition.
- There will be no training during school holidays, and shorter training (max 1 hour) during Ramadan - the Ramadan training is necessary as schools with even more established programs than ICB would have started their training from Nov 2023.
Sign-ups
The Cyber Club makes no apologies about being a club for the highest achievers, and to stay at the level we are at, significant commitment and effort is required.
- New Year 7 students will be considered based on a sign-up interview.
- New Year 8 (and older) students will be considered based on sign-up interview as well as academic grades and teacher references.
- Sign-ups will open in early Term 4, with interviews to be conducted at the end of Term 4 2023.
- Some space allocation will be made for students who are joining ICB in 2024 for an opportunity to participate next year.
