Islamic Studies Curriculum Overview
At ICB, we believe in nurturing well-rounded individuals who not only excel academically but also develop a strong moral and spiritual foundation. Our Islamic Studies curriculum is designed to provide students with a deep understanding of the principles and teachings of Islam, promoting character development, ethical values, and a sense of community. Through this curriculum, students will embark on a journey of self-discovery and spiritual growth while appreciating the rich cultural heritage of Islam.
Curriculum Objectives:
- Knowledge and Understanding: Our curriculum aim to equip students with a comprehensive understanding of Islamic history, beliefs, practices, and ethics. Through engaging lessons and interactive activities, students will explore the core tenets of Islam, the life of Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him), and the contributions of Muslim scholars.
- Character Education: We emphasize the importance of moral values and ethical conduct in line with Islamic teachings. Students will learn about virtues such as honesty, compassion, humility, and respect, cultivating a strong sense of empathy and social responsibility.
- Spiritual Growth: Our curriculum encourages students to develop a deep and meaningful connection with their faith. Through reflection, prayer, and discussions, students will be guided to strengthen their relationship with Allah and develop a sense of mindfulness in their daily lives.
Curriculum Highlights:
- Quranic Studies: Students will delve into the recitation and understanding of the Quran, learning the rules of Tajweed (pronunciation) and connecting with the timeless wisdom contained within. ICB has an annual Quran competition that showcases the efforts of the students and teachers alike.
- Hadith Studies: Through the study of authentic sayings of Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him), students will gain insights into his exemplary character and teachings.
- Islamic History: Students will explore the history of Islam from its early days to the present, learning about key events, personalities, and the spread of Islamic civilization.
- Ethics and Morality: Our curriculum emphasizes the importance of ethical behavior and moral values in Islam, helping students develop into compassionate and responsible individuals. ICB has a dedicated program called Islamic character development where students are shown practically how to display good character in different scenarios and circumstances.
- Spirituality and practice- Events like the Haj enactment, homeless feeding and daily prayers gives ICB students the opportunity to practice the fundamentals of faith and implantation of its laws in a holistic manner.
Curriculum Objectives:
Included in the curriculum is different activities that allows our students to become active members of the community and engage with the wider community to produce more meaningful relationships.
- Khutba Training Program: Grade 12 boys are trained and given opportunities to deliver Jumuah khutbas at ICB multiple times throughout the year. The Khutba training program assist students to learn how to deliver Jumuah khutbas that will empower them for the future. Many students of ICB lead taraweeh/Qiyaamul layl prayers during Ramadan at various venues and masaajid. Many ex-students now deliver Jumuah khutbas at different masaajid and venues in QLD.
- Fundraising – ICB does fundraising for internationally as well as locally based charities depending on the need. ICB students also assist occasionally with feeding the homeless and other outreach community programs.
- Janazah and ghusl demonstration– Grade 12 students are given a practical demonstration on washing, shrouding and burial of a deceased person by Muslim Funeral Services in Kuraby. Students learn a lot from this experience.
- Inter-Faith relationships – ICB students engage regularly with students from other schools fostering friendships based on tolerance and understanding. This gives our students to learn about the wider community and become active citizens.
Curriculum Highlights:
The Senior Islamic studies curriculum will incorporate the following:
- Islamic studies diploma: This will allow students to get QCE points which will assist students with their ATAR in grade 12.
- Yaqeen curriculum: ICB has engaged with Yaqeen curriculum to ensure that our students engage with tough topics relating to our faith. This curriculum is scholar-backed, has an engaging framework, and has an interactive approach which caters to the 21st century learner. ICB will start using this curriculum in the senior years which will give our students the tools to be able to engage with the wider society about our beliefs and practices as well as develop confidence in our students regarding their own faith. Some of the unit’s students will engage in are:
- Islam and homosexuality: Reframing the narrative on LGBTQI
- The case for Allah’s existence
- Why we worship God
- How can evil coexist with a merciful God?
